Description

What is Byrider?

The idea behind Byrider was first conceived in Marion, Indiana, in 1979 by founder Jim DeVoe Sr. Created during a period of high interest rates and tightening credit, the concept addressed a critical need: providing reliable transportation to hardworking consumers who were unable to qualify for traditional bank financing.

To meet this need, Jim developed a dealership model that combined quality used vehicles with in-house financing, allowing customers to buy and finance a vehicle in one location. This integrated approach enabled Byrider to compete effectively in the buy-here-pay-here segment while delivering meaningful impact within local communities.

As the model matured, Byrider expanded into franchising, opening its first location in 1989 and growing into a nationally recognized system.

In 2024, Byrider entered a new chapter when a group of six long-tenured franchisees acquired the brand from and formed a franchisee-led board. Today, Byrider is owned and governed by franchisees, ensuring that strategic decisions are made by operators who understand the business at the store level and are directly invested in the long-term success of the system.

This franchisee-first structure reinforces Byrider’s commitment to disciplined operations, shared accountability, and a mission centered on helping customers Buy, Finance, and Drive On®, even when traditional lenders say no.

One of the most compelling aspects of the Byrider franchise opportunity is its flexibility and scalability through our turnkey BHPH business model. Our vertically integrated model combines vehicle sales, centralized underwriting through CNAC, and in-house service operations giving franchisees greater control, consistency, and margin visibility. Some franchisees choose to be hands-on operators involved in day-to-day dealership management, while others operate as semi-absentee owners with operating partners running the day to day. As experience and confidence grow, many franchisees expand into multi-unit ownership, leveraging Byrider’s systems to scale efficiently.

Regardless of ownership style, Byrider provides the structure, support, and infrastructure to align with your goals.

Comprehensive Training: Byrider offers a robust blend of in-person, onsite, and online training, ensuring franchisees and their teams are fully equipped with the operational, financial, and compliance tools needed to run the business effectively.

Proven Technology Platform: Franchisees benefit from Byrider’s ongoing investment in technology, including systems designed to support underwriting, servicing, reporting, and operational efficiency across the dealership.

Ownership Flexibility: Whether you prefer to actively manage your dealership or oversee operations from a distance, Byrider’s model and support structure are built to accommodate multiple ownership profiles. We can talk through what these ownership structures look like and the best practices to layer your ownership accordingly.

Established Brand Advantage: Byrider franchisees leverage a nationally recognized brand and a full library of professionally developed marketing and advertising materials. These resources help drive traffic and build trust in local markets without requiring franchisees to independently fund or create brand assets.
